This is my experiential understanding confirmed by Scripture:

Man is made in the image of God. We have a spirit, soul and body, three-in-one.

When we are born again in Spirit, our old fallen adamic spirit is regenerated as a new eternal, incorruptible spirit that is born of the Holy Spirit.
In that sense, we have the Holy Spirit since we are born of the Spirit.
This is just as the new spirit of Jesus was put in Mary's womb by the Spirit before He was conceived.

Now, when Jesus was baptised by John Baptist, He received the indwelling Holy Spirit.
This is the Pentecostal baptism with the Holy Spirit for us all.
It is only when we have received the Holy Spirit by this baptism of Jesus Himself, who is spoken of by John Baptist as the baptiser with the Holy Spirit,
that the Spirit of God will then indwell in us permanently.
When we received the Holy Spirit and power, we received all of the gifts and power of the Holy Spirit, the whole person and Presence of God..not in parts and pieces.
However, at this point, our mind or soul may not have been renewed to that of the mind of Christ yet.
As we renew our mind, die to Self and surrender and yield to Jesus and His Word through the Holy Spirit in us and obey His Word to do good works for His Kingdom, He will manifest selected or all of the gifts and power of the Holy Spirit to the people.
We are thus, filled more and more of the Holy Spirit as we thirst for more and more of Him, our cup overflows.

The more we know Him intimately by our renewing of mind and yielding, we know His Presence more and more.
This may or may not be accompanied by "feelings" or our five-senses sensations but the "knowing" of His Presence around is very real.
Now, because our body is still a corruptible, mortal body before His coming, we are able to feel physical reactions to His Presence since He is Righteous, Holy and Pure but we are not.
This is similar for the case of our mind and emotions.

As we grow in maturity to keep our mind on the things of the Spirit and not on the flesh,
we no longer need to "feel" His Presence any more nor do we look for such feelings to know that He is in us, with us and for us,
because we now have faith, that we know Him intimately in Spirit.
